Murphy

The O'Murphys, originally from Wexford, are mention by Smith as a numerous clan in Muskerry, and there are many respectable families of the name in the city of Cork. (errata Owen Connellan translation of the Four Masters Annals of Ireland p177)

Finding Murphys is like looking for that proverbial needle in a haystack.  Michael was born in Ireland about 1833 and was living in Stratford, Perth, Ontario when he married in 1861. His civil marriage record names his parents but does not say whether they are alive or deceased, in Ireland or Canada and no mention of a county in Ireland has been found to date.

A recent find in the parish records seems promising, but I still lack records to say it is the right family.

James Murphy born 1797 in Bantry, Ireland to James and Mary Keogh most probably married Mary Brion on 8 Nov 1832.  Note the spelling of the name Brion which is unusual but found on the christening records of the four children I found, Michael bn 1 Sep 1833, James b 29 Oct 1836, Jeremiah b 28 Apr 1839 and Mary b 28 Aug 1843.  There are four records for a James Murphy in Bantry in Griffity's valuations.  One is a town lot where James runs a spirit house. One is on the town quay, one is in the townland of Dromkeal and one in the townland of Kealkill where with his mother James holds over 70 acres.  These are most likely four separate James Murphys but one or more could have more than one holding.

I found this family promising for a number of reasons.  First it is the only James Murphy that I have found born in 1833 with a father James Murphy and a mother Mary Brion (of any spelling).  There are a number of James Murphy's born in 1833 some with Mary Brien for a mother but the fathers name was always wrong.

This family has a son James (2nd) and a daughter Mary (1st) which is common in naming practices and there are other Michael Murphy's in the area.  So....perhaps a record will pop up somewhere to help.  I didn't not find the family in later records in Ireland, but I also haven't found positive records for James and family in Canada.
