McArdle

McArdle is an anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac Árdghail, or son of Ardghal.  Ardghal translates to high valor or possibly tall stranger, which might suggest a Viking background. The name is common in Armagh and Louth. The Mac Árdghails were a branch of the McMahons of Oriel with a branch becoming sub-chiefs of the O'Neills in Armagh.  Our McArdles are found in Madden (now Maddan), Derrynoose Parish, Armagh in the last half of the eighteenth century.

Notes:

Our family link to the McArdle's of Madden, Armagh is proven by DNA.  Not only are there links to Alice but also to some of her siblings.  With little known information about the family at this point.
