The FITSIMONS a numerous clan in the county of Cavan, chiefly in the barony of Castlerahan, who came originally from the English Pale, being of Anglo-Norman descent, but have long been located in the county of Cavan. Unlike many Irish clans there are no basic arms attributable to all Irish Fitzsimmons families.
The name is first found in Ireland shortly after the anglo-Norman invasion. Among the Norman families brought to County Down in 1177 by John de Courcy were some Fitzsimon. Others of the name followed the Pendergast to County Mayo in the early thirteenth century. In 1585 a Fitzsimon possessed Castlereagh and other castles in the area.
The name is often found variously as Simon, Simons and Fitzsimon, etc for the same family, indeed for the same person. Searching for records using all possible variations is a must.

1505 Edmond Dorcha, of the family of the knicht Simunach (Fitsimon), prior of Fore, died (barony of Demifore, Westmeath)
My GGG grandmother was Rose Fitzsimmons Barton (born 1827) and she had a sister named Ellen Fitzsimmons Dunney (born 1841) and another named Anna Fitzsimmons (born 1828) who lived in Albany NY. Their parents were Michael (born 1796) and Catharine. Do not know much about Ann, but the Fitzsimmons family is buried in both Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont NY and St Agnes in Menands NY.
ReplyDeleteFurther research suggests that my gg aunt Anna Fitzsimmons is most likely your Anna Fitzsimmons Madden. My great grandfather's bible (Christopher Barton (Bardon) has the name Anna Madden listed as his mother Rose's sister along with Ellen Fitzsimmons Dunney who was born much later in 1841. There is a family tree under the name of John Franklin and Elizabeth Hanlon Kinney that shows Anna Fitzsimmons (born 1828) which is my family. They lived in Albany, NY. The Albany Fitzsimmons family is the same family portrayed in the movie Ironweed. Some very old family photos shows the family with boats on the Hudson River. My mother said some of her family lived in boats on the Hudson and that she was related to the Madden family and that there was a stone in St Agnes Cemetery in Menands NY on the upper hill in the back section. I know that around 1915 many of the graves in the old St Mary's Cemetery in Albany (where Albany High School now stands) were moved to St. Agnes in Menands. jberchar@aol.com
